MUSHClient tutorial

Getting Started (MUSHclient)

Setting up MUSHclient

Download MUSHclient here, install it, and launch it.
Select “Quick Connect” from the “Connection” menu.

“World Name” can be whatever you want, but something descriptive is useful.
“TCP/IP Address” is furhaus.online.
“Port Number” is 4000.

Click OK. MUSHclient will open a window with your session, and try to connect to the MUSH. If successful, you’ll see a window like this:

Creating an account

Just like with F-list, your presence in FurhausMUSH is composed of an account you use to log in, and characters you play. You may enter any name for your account name; you will enter the names of characters separately.

Create an account here: https://furhaus.online/auth/register or use create <username> <password>.

Connect to your account using connect <username> <password> within MUSHclient.

Creating a character

An account starts with no characters. You can create characters using either the website, or MUSHclient. Since we’re already here, let’s use MUSHclient.

To create a new character, use charcreate <name> = <description> where <name> is an exact match for the F-list character you wish to use in FurhausMUSH. Once you are logged in as that character, you can use the moniker command to change their name to your preferred name. = <description> is a short description of your character, this is optional and can be added later on and changed at any time.

After creating a character, you’ll be prompted to verify your ownership by messaging Sharkemoji, the Furhaus bot, with a token given to you by the MUSH. Copy-paste the command !mushverify <token> as a PM to Sharkemoji from the character you are creating, and you should recieve a response and a short guide on where to go next.

You can now play as this character with the command ic <charactername> in your MUSHclient session.

Customizing your character

Your character starts as a blank slate, and you can customize many aspects of their presentation, which will be seen by others. The most basic are their gender, using the command gender, their general description, using the command setdesc (this is the same as the description you optionally entered while creating the character, and writing a new one will overwrite the previous), and descriptions for individual parts of their body, using bodydesc. Prefixing help to any command will bring up relevant info, like the available options for gender and available body-parts to describe with bodydesc, along with syntax examples.

Tailoring MUSHclient

A simple but useful customization is saving your login credentials to make MUSHclient input them automatically when you connect:

Configuration Menu (alt+enter) > General > Connecting > Character name and password

Note the “Connect Text” field, where I’ve input ic emille. When MUSHclient starts and connects, it will send this as a command, automatically logging me in as the selected character.
Once you’re connected, you’ll have access to MUSH-specific configuration options, through Game > Configure > All Configuration…, or shortcut Alt+Enter.

Also useful for FurhausMUSH in particular are the following settings:

Lastly, if you have trouble distinguishing text from the background, you have full control over every color through the ANSI Colour menu. The most likely culprits are bold blue and purple, and you can change them by simply clicking on each swatch and picking a new color.

Saving and Exiting

You may want to save all of these changes so as to not apply them all every time you use the MUSH. To do this, save the world details using the File menu.

After saving and quitting, you can re-launch MUSHclient directly from the World file, in this case emille.mcl stored at C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\MUSHclient\worlds\emille.MCL. You can, of course, move this file somewhere more convenient or make a shortcut to it. In this example I’ve also created a catch-all furhaus.mcl file, which omits the Connect Text, to let me pick a character manually. You can even have a file for every character you play as, which makes picking one or switching between them a breeze!
